Liver cancer is a disease which occurs in the liver. The treatment for this disease is dependent on a variety of factors, such as the size of the tumor and the stage of the cancer. Outside of western countries, the time of survival after this disease has been diagnosed is about three months. This is often attributed to the level of medical care available in many countries.

Liver cancer is much more prevalent in some parts of the world than others. In Southeast Asia and certain parts of Africa this disease is the most common form of cancer. Taiwan and China both have a high percentage of people who die from this disease. Men tend to suffer from this disease much more than women, and the age in which they get the disease can be from their teenage years until they are over 30 years of age.

Liver disease is often a result of Hepatitis B, and populations which have large numbers of people who get this disease are prone to have large cases of liver cancer as well. The amount of time it takes a person to develop liver cancer after they've contracted Hepatitis B can take many years to occur. Liver cancer is considered to be one of the most dangerous diseases in China. Certain peanuts and corn which are stored for long periods of time may get a fungus which can produce mycotoxins which can lead to liver cancer.

When tumors are discovered in patients, they have usually spread from tumors which are located in other parts of the body. In countries like the United States, liver cancer is seen by the medical community as being rare, and generally occurs in those who have prior problems in the liver. The disease can often be detected using ultrasound devices, and can be detected much earlier than many African and Asian countries.

The diagnoses for liver cancer is usually made after a CT scan has been taken of the abdominal region of the patient. The radiologists is able to find small tumors using this method, and the stage of the cancer can be determined by additional studies. Patients who suffer from liver cancer generally have one tumor which is very large, or they will have multiple small tumors.

To properly treat liver cancer, doctors need information on the size of the tumors, how far they have spread, and how much they have effected the vessels within the liver. It is also important for doctors to check for tumor capsules, and a MRI will often have to be used for this purpose. Once all of this information has been determined, the proper form of treatment can be found. A liver transplant can often be performed by taking the liver of a corpse or a live donor to replace the diseased liver of the patient.

Surgery can also be performed in order to treat tumors which are small or growing at a slow rate. Surgery is the best form of treatment for long term patients, but only 10% of cases are effectively able to be treated using surgery. Some patients may have increased rates of death by using surgical methods of treatment. Another method used in treating patients who have liver cancer is radio frequency ablation. Radio waves of high frequency are used to stop the tumor.

High frequency ultrasound is another method which is used to treat liver cancer patients. Though it is at an experimental point right now, this method of treatment offers much promise in fighting the disease in the future. The primary research for this method of treatment is being conducted in China and England. Chemotherapy is also used, but the results with this form of treatment varies, and it has not been shown that it is more effective than other treatments.

Liver cancer is a disease which has many treatments, and each treatment has its own advantages and disadvantages. Many medical researchers have begun studying genes to look for clues which can better help in fighting liver cancer. Many scientists are looking for biomarkers in certain individuals which make them more susceptible to this disease than others. Finding the genes and proteins which are responsible for the development of liver cancer to lead to treatments in the future which could completely cure the disease.

While liver cancer is rare in some parts of the world, in other places it is a source for serious concern. Many people in Africa and Asia die from this disease every year. The survival time after diagnoses has been made is very short. Methods to combat this form of cancer are critical in these parts of the world, and many scientists are working hard at finding the most effective methods to treat or cure the disease, and extend the life of the patient as much as possible. Liver cancer is a disease which is very dangerous, and is hard to detect when the right tools aren't readily available.
