Liquid Diet

A liquid diet is a special type of diet in which foods liquid at room temperature are eaten. Some foods which are considered to be a part of a liquid diet are clear broth, weak tea, and apple juice. The liquid diet foods are eaten for a few days before you are allowed to eat normal food. While a liquid diet can help you lose weight, it does not provide all the nutrients your body needs.

Liquid diets are often used before surgery or a medical test to insure that the digestive track is free of any solid foods. The digestive tract is the area of the body in which food travels as it is digested. If you have surgery on your stomach or abdomen, you will have difficulty eating normal foods, and you may have to go on a liquid diet temporarily. The goal of a liquid diet is to provide you with a few of the essential nutrients you need until you are able to begin eating regular foods.

In addition to surgery, a liquid diet is good for those who wish to lose weight. A person may drink weak teas and eat chicken broth for a certain period of time in order to reduce the amount of saturated fat they take into the body. A liquid diet is a good way to lose weight without going cold turkey. Trying to force the body to lose weight will not work, and after going cold turkey people usually eat more than they normally would.

Liquid diets can be used to help patients gradually reduce the amount of foods high in saturated fats they eat. Liquid foods can be eaten while certain foods high in fat are slowly phased out of the diet. Popsicles, sports drinks, and broths are often consumed a few times a day. Though this diet has many benefits, there are also risks that should be taken into consideration.

If you have surgery, and you do not follow this diet prior to your operation, you may have to reschedule the surgery. If you do not follow this diet after your surgery you could suffer from diarrhea, nausea, or vomiting. The liquid diet will not give you all the nutrients you need, and if you follow it exclusively, you will have a nutrient deficiency. This could lead to poor health. It is important to discuss this diet plan with your doctor before you have surgery.
