Health Supplement

Health supplements are minerals or vitamins which are designed to provide nutrients to the body which may be missing in your diet. Supplements may also come in the form of herbs, amino acids, or energy bars. It is usually taken orally as a tablet or capsule, and the bottle is almost always labeled as a dietary supplement.

Health supplements are not to be taken as an alternative to conventional food. They usually supplement the existing food which a person eats by providing them with nutrients which may not be present in the food. A lot of the food eaten by many people today is processed, and does not contain the natural vitamins or minerals necessary for quality health. Because of this, health supplements are in high demand, and are also the subject of an ongoing debate.

The FDA treats health supplements like food instead of drugs. Health supplements are not approved in the same manner as drugs, and the FDA can only go after health supplement companies after they have begun selling unsafe products on the market. This is not the case with foods for infants, which have more strict regulations because infants are much more vulnerable than adults.

The goal of a health supplement is based on how it is classified. Supplements which claim to cure or prevent any disease are considered to be unauthorized drug, and it is seen as being a violation of laws and regulations which govern drugs. The only thing that a supplement company can disclose is the minerals and nutrients contained by the vitamin, and their function. The FDA must be contacted by the health supplement companies within a month of their use.

Despite this, many people feel that health supplement companies make unsubstantiated claims, and the benefit of supplements has not yet been scientifically demonstrated. The European Union has passed a law which requires health supplement companies to demonstrate the safety and quality of their supplements. Some supplements are good in small amounts, but dangerous in large doses.

A large debate is being made against vitamin B, and arguments in the scientific community are also being waged against the use and benefits of vitamin C supplements. Many proponents of health supplements feel that the scientific and medical establishment are more concerned with money and treatments than real solutions, and feel that a war is being waged against health supplements because they are in fact beneficial, and low in cost compared to other treatment methods. The high cost of medical care has caused many people to turn to supplements and alternative medicines.
